The Job — Shower Out, Bath In
The client in Altona North had a functional bathroom but no bath — just a shower recess that hadn't been updated in years. They were renovating the room and wanted a bath fitted in the same footprint. Our scope was all the plumbing: disconnecting the old shower waste and supply lines, modifying the rough-in to suit the bath's drain and overflow position, and fitting the bath once tiling was complete.
The before photo below shows the bathroom ahead of the renovation — the original shower configuration with the existing waste point. The after photo shows the finished bath in position, all connections made, ready for use.

How the Plumbing Was Done
A bath and a shower have different plumbing requirements. A shower waste is typically a 50mm floor waste sitting flush with the tile. A bath needs a 40mm waste outlet at the base of the bath connected to a P-trap, plus an overflow fitting near the rim that ties into the same line. These positions are fixed by where the bath sits — the rough-in has to match.
In this job, the existing waste was repositioned to align with the bath waste outlet. The supply lines — hot and cold — were capped and re-routed to the bath mixer tap position. All connections were made before the bath was set down, with access panels considered for any future maintenance.

The new bath waste outlet sits in a different position to the old shower waste. We modified the drain line to align with the bath's fixed drain position, ensuring correct fall throughout.
Bath overflow assembly connected and run to the waste line. P-trap installed below floor level with correct depth for the bath waste outlet height.
Hot and cold supply re-routed through the wall to the bath mixer tap position. Lines pressure-tested before tiling commenced.
Bath set into position after tiling was complete. Waste, overflow, and tap connections finalised. Bath filled and all fittings checked for leaks — none found.
